A 4-year-old storage area network is keeping up with 4.6T of workaday data for 1,500 employees at the Census Bureau and soon will double its capacity.
Census' Network Technical Services Branch migrated to two Magnitude SAN storage subsystems from Xiotech Corp. of Eden Prairie, Minn., after using local storage on Hewlett-Packard Co. Compaq servers for many years. When the branch moved to the SAN environment about four years ago, it eliminated internal storage on the Compaq servers, said Dino Tolentino, an IT specialist with Census' Client Support Office.
The two SAN devices currently support about 30 servers running Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris and Novell NetWare 5.1, Tolentino said.
Before the SAN, it took a weekend to restore data to an upgraded server, Tolentino said. Now it takes two minutes.
